Martin The Maurauder
Martin the Maurauder ran away from his home at 14 to join the Army. It seems he got in a scrape with the local lord who felt he was treating the local people cruelly, so he stuck a pitchfork into the Lords foot. He joined up in the Army and was quickly sent oversea's from Plymouth to fight the wars with the French. There he learnt his trade with muskets and pistols becoming an accomplished shot with both. In a lull in the fighting he got into an argument with an officer, there was a duel and he wounded an officer with a pistol shot. The next day there was a battle and he was released as all men were required to fight. He played dead on the field, the Army thinking that either the French had taken him or he was dead soon closed the incident regarding the duel. He changed his identity and took a ship to England. There he fell in with a gang of highwaymen and learnt quickly how to make a fortune or two on the London Road. His drinking, wenching and gambling got the better of him so he returned to Devon and then Cornwall. His last hold up near Bath made him enough to retire comfortably for life as he had intercepted the King's Courier who had a map that lead to a small fortune in gold. Of course on returning to Cornwall he lost the lot and he quickly fell in with the 'Brethren of the Coast' and after a few trips around the Carribean he settled in Port Royal, Jamaica for a time. It was reported he was lost at sea off the Spanish Main..........or was he?
